Die Welt rätselt noch immer – oder immer mehr –, wie es dazu kommen konnte, dass ein egomaner Selfmade-Millionenerbe und schillernder Soap-Star als mutmaßlich mächtigster Mann der westlichen Welt chargieren darf. Leserinnen und Leser von Garry Trudeaus Pulitzer-prämiertem Daily Strip »Doonesbury« wissen immerhin, warum es genau so kommen musste, nachdem es nun mal dazu gekommen ist. Trudeau seziert seit 1970 in seinem Strip US-amerikanische Befindlichkeiten. 1987 tauchte darum erstmals auch ein gewisser großmäuliger Immobilienmogul darin auf – und seither war Trump immer öfter zu Gast, um seine erratischen Eskapaden einer erstaunt amüsierten Öffentlichkeit vorzuführen. Der selber sagte anfangs dazu, man habe ihm erklärt, er solle sich geschmeichelt fühlen, bei »Doonesbury« eine Rolle zu spielen. Zum Schluss ließ er nur noch verächtlich verlauten, das würde ja eh kaum einer lesen. Stimmt. Jedenfalls waren es immer noch zu wenige.
